Dia 6

Creando las historias/Creating stories
Fer mostrando el nuevo títere: El chaman/Fer showing the new puppet: The Shaman

Victor

Me inspiran!

----------------------------------
Today we woke up early to go to Piste and do grocery shopping. On the way back Misael, Edgar and Victor’s dad, told us a bit about how the community of Yaxunah is organized. He told us that every time someone came into the community, it was always shared with the residents and it was told how the visit would benefit the community.  It made me think about the work that we are developing here.

After we had breakfast together and I started packing because today is my last day here. Tomorrow I am going back to Toronto the city where I live.

Bit by bit everyone started to arrive and Fernando started playing coco de roda music. Coco is a rhythm that comes from Pernambuco in the Northeast of Brazil.  He asked me to some steps from this fun cultural manifestation.  We made a circle and we started to move to the rhythm of coco de roda. After he put all of us to dance a bit of cumbia and he asked the whole group to go two by two.  It was amazing to see them express themselves through their bodies, it shows how much they want to learn and the more they repeated the steps the better they came out.

After we started to work with the puppets and how to use them, it impresses me how fast they learn, today is the second time that they have the opportunity to work with them and already looks so much better.  They did improvisation exercises and it was a lot of fun. They still need to losen up a bit but we have come a long way in just a week.

Once we finished this activity we started writing a story, my group was to write about how the Aluxes came to life and I was thrill to be part of the process, I was happy of including all of them and hearing what each one had to add to it.  I like guiding them and sharing on how a story has a beginning, a conflict and an end.  At the end the four groups read their stories, and we are getting closer and closer to the final stretch.

We had lunch at Manuel’s house, pasta soup along with chicken and cucumber.  This soup was perfect because some of us are coming with a cold, Vicky has been dealing with one and Fer and I started today.
When we came back from lunch everyone got to work on the puppets.  Abraham, Sebas and Vicky each led a group.  I finished doing interviews of the guides, CCC’s staff and the kids. It is so beautiful to hear what each one of them has to share and how smart they are. They inspire me!

After we held the closing circle, while we were breathing together I could feel my tears ready to come out, time flew by here in Yaxunah and part of me did not want to leave. After our last breathing together Fer said – If anyone has anything to say, say it now or hold your peace forever. I raised my hand and said my goodbye to the group.  I thanked all of them and I reminded them about the importance of telling our own stories and self-representation.  After as a beautiful gesture Fer made the everyone in the circle to turn except me. Each kid and guide gave me a hug that will forever live in my heart. And this is not the end, before we had dinner at around 8pm.  Fer called me into the palapa, he tells me –there is a blackout here come and help me. When I opened the door everyone screamed – surprised. I screamed much harder than all of them in my surprise, I think I scared all of them.  The kids made drawings and wrote me letters.  I would not want to be anyone else in the world, this experience has been beautiful not only for me but for the rest of the guides.  I am so excited about seen the play from here in Canada and I hope to go back soon to share more time and space with the kids and the community of Yaxunah.
